What is your job at KAMAX?
As the Team Leader of Induction Heat Treat and the Parts Washers, I ensure the operations are running efficiently while maintaining quality. I started my career running thread rollers then switched over to Induction Heat Treat, where I have been most of my 20+ years with KAMAX. The majority of the parts we induction treat are for Ford, some are for Chrysler. The induction process heats the first 3-5 threads of the fastener using an induction coil at temperatures of up to 1580 degrees Fahrenheit (860 degrees Celsius). This makes the tip of the fastener strong enough to eliminate the need for tapping and makes it easier for the customer to assemble their products.
What is so special about your machine, the induction machine?
The induction machine is relatively new – less than 2 years old. I recall spending 2 weeks with the manufacturer troubleshooting the machine prior to delivery. The induction machine runs 2-3 times faster than our previous machines. It has also eliminated the need to hand-feed double-ended studs and ball studs. Hands-down it’s much better than the older machines we used.
What is it that you like most about your work?
It all boils down to my coworkers. My fellow coworkers are great and it makes for a better day, it really does. This is important to me. Having good people to work with who are easy to get along with makes the work day easier. The hi-lo drivers are good to me. I enjoy working with Ciro, the Heat Treat Manager, and touching base with Carri, the Heat Treat Planner, multiple times a day. I’m training a new employee and he is picking it up quickly, often after one try, which is nice. I’ve worked elsewhere where people had negative attitudes and it made for a long day. The Heat Treat employees are the opposite.
What do you do when you’re not at KAMAX?
My wife, Crystal, and I like to camp and sit around the bonfire with friends and family. In fact, we just bought a new camper. We enjoy spending time with the grandkids. We have a blended family of 6 children and 7 grandchildren ages 2 to 8. I also play softball and shoot pool at the pub. Powerlifting has been an important part of my life and I am looking to get back into it when I have a little more free-time. I set a personal best in the bench press right before I turned 50. That felt good.
