COVER STORY

869 meters shorter and 141 minutes less

To simplify and speed up the processes in our plants, we do not only have the PPA project but numerous other smaller and larger initiatives. For example in Museros (Spain), we have succeeded in reducing the setup time and the walking distance of machine operators by a multiple. OPEX teams throughout Europe are striving for such successes under the catchphrase “turbo setup”.

1159 meters. That was the distance which Jesús L. Pérez and Modesto Martínez had to cover at the beginning of this year in order to convert the BV4-1 in Museros initially to a new part. The whole process originally took 231 minutes. In so-called SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Dies) workshops, the machine was used to set new standards for setups. With a cross-departmental team of eight people, they first determined the current state, and then scrutinized each individual step of the way. This led to the creation of simpler approaches to setting up the machine.

In addition, the handover process was reorganized and the preparation of the tools was optimized to avoid machine stoppage. And new tool boards are used to ensure that the required parts can always be found directly where they are needed. Step by step, this has not only reduced the walking distances, but also the total time required for changeover considerably. As a result, the walking distance for the setup was reduced by 869 meters and the time required by 141 minutes!
